Jim Dieren - Santa Claus is a Bass
I joined Ashington and District Male Voice Choir just under one year ago (2024).
Like most singers I started with school choirs at the age of about 6 and as I progressed through school I continued singing and became involved with brass bands, jazz groups and orchestras as a trombonist. In my late teens I sang with Newcastle City Choir (as a tenor). In my mid 20's to my 70s, I joined a variety of local amateur operatic societies where I performed in many shows as a lead or in the chorus slipping down through baritone and bass. Music has always been an important and enjoyable hobby as well as a vital part of a healthy social network.
I've always been one for seeking new horizons/challenges so when I reached an age when treading the boards was no longer an option I took up a new challenge by joining Ashington and was not disappointed. I was immediately made to feel really welcome by a group of very positive, talented and diverse guys with a great sense of humour. Initially the learning curve was steep as there were so many pieces of music to learn but with the musical virtuosity of Derek on the keyboard and Neil as the MD (and resident stand up comedian) taking us through the lines I was very quickly brought up to speed.
The committee are very organised/hard working/transparent and supportive of all members (old and new) ensuring the choir moves forward with new music and venues.
Best of all is the tea/coffee and chocolate biscuit in the break for a mere 50p.
